Born in Delft, March 4, 1934, Dr. Goudzwaard studied economics at the Dutch Economy High School in Rotterdam from 1951 to 1957, completing his studies with a dissertation entitled 'Unpriced Scarcity "(1970).Member of Dutch Parliament for the ARP from 1967 to 1971, Dr. Goudzwaard became professor of economics at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Free University of Amsterdam, a position he held from 1971 to 1999. With publications including Capitalism and Progress, Beyond Poverty and Affluence, Idols of Our Times, and most recently, Hope in Troubled Times, Dr. Goudzwaard is a welcome addition to the Paideia Centre's growing community of fellows.

Vita:

 

- Studied Economics in the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, Masters degree 1959.

- 1959 – 1966: Research assistant for dr Abraham Kuyper foundation in the Hague.

- 1967 – 1971: Anti-Revolutionary Party member Dutch Parliament (second chamber).

- 1970: Received doctors degree in Economics from the Erasmus University, Rotterdam

for a thesis: Unpriced Scarcity & the role of expretial effects in Economic theory

- 1971 – 1999: Professor of Economics and Economic Policy in the Social Faculty of

the Free University in Amsterdam.

- 1973 – 1983 rector of training-centre for the Dutch Christian Labour Union (CNV).

- 1976: Chair of the election-committee for the Christian Democratic Party (CDA)

which led to the policy platform Not by bread alone

- 1979: honorary professor of the Rector Dhanis Chair, University of Antwerp, Belgium.

- 1981 – 1991: chairperson of Dutch Christian Interchurch Aid (ICCO)

- 1986: nominated professor Cultural Philosophy in the Faculty of Philosophy of the

Free University of Amsterdam.

- 1996 – 2001: chairperson of the European Ecumenical Commission on Development

(EECOD) in Brussels.

- 2005 – 2007. member of the AGAPE-study group (Alternative Globalisation

Addressing People and Earth) of the World Council of Churches ,and chairing some

encounters between the WCC, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

- 2002 – present: Advisor of the Department on Justice, Peace and Creation of the

World Council of Churches, Geneva. .

- 2010 - (forthcoming) : Honory doctor of the Protestant Theological University in the

Netherlands..

 

Bob Goudzwaard is a fellow of the Institute of Christian Studies, Toronto, and Knight in

the order of the Dutch Lion. From 1959 till 2009 he was married with Riny van Helden

and is the father of two sons and two daughters, and grandfather of five grandchildren,.

Married dr Elaine Botha on april 8, 2010 , and lives now partially in Canada. His Church

affiliation is the Protestant Church of the Nettherlands..
