Local Food in Atlanta: the Ellis Hotel Restaurant

In November 2010 The Scripture and Hermeneutics Seminar held its annual meeting on
the Friday between the meetings of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) and the
Society of Biblical Literature (SBL). Thousands of people gather for these meetings and
each year they are held in late November in a different North American city. This year
was Atlanta and as usual the conference took place in a large American hotel.
My good friend Jim Kinney took me to lunch at a local food restaurant, the restaurant
in the Ellis Hotel (www.ellishotel.com). What a wonderful discovery! Our waitress
Monique informed us that they source their food from local farms and make their own
sauces and dressings. Vegetables and fruit are available depending on what is in season.
Jim and I sat out on their balcony in the wonderful, mild Atlanta weather and enjoyed
a truly memorable soup and salad with a glass of red wine. The food was delicious, the
service excellent, and prices were very reasonable! Not surprisingly groups of us returned
repeatedly to the Ellis. We met the manager Tracey, who invited us back one evening for
wine tasting and boards of local cheeses.
It is great to see this sort of restaurant flourishing in an American city; hopefully it is a
sign of the emerging local food culture in North America. If ever you are in downtown
Atlanta the Ellis comes with a strong recommendation.
