What We Do
We live amidst a renaissance of interest in public theology, i.e. in relating the Gospel to the whole of contemporary life. This is an important development, standing as it does in opposition to modernity’s privatization of religion, whereby religion was confined to the private domain and excluded from the public square.
The Kuyperian tradition (named after Abraham Kuyper) has been working in this area for over a century and has great resources to offer to the renewed interest in public theology [Bartholomew’s inaugural speech attached]. The Paideia Centre for Public Theology (hereafter The Centre) aims to renew and advance the Kuyperian tradition in this context.
As part of orthodox, trinitarian Christianity The Centre will focus in particular on serving the church and the world in the area of scholarship. Faculty of the Centre will write and publish at the highest level and will also supervise and mentor doctoral students. Provision will also be made for post-doctoral students. The scholarly work of the Centre will be nourished in an intellectual community rooted in liturgy and spirituality and informed at its heart by Scripture.
The Centre will seek to serve Christian academics as they seek to integrate their faith with their scholarship. In its early years The Centre will focus on the foundational areas of philosophy, theology and biblical studies, but its long term vision is to work in relation to all the disciplines. The Centre’s scholarship will be intentionally missional in engaging the cultural issues of the day from an overtly Christian perspective. The Centre will also seek to serve the church by communicating its work at a popular and accessible level.
The Centre will network with likeminded scholars locally, nationally, across North America and internationally. To do this we will however be rooted locally in Hamilton, southern Ontario, Canada. In order to pursue this vision we regard it as vital that we develop an intellectual community located in a particular place, which is grounded in a vibrant spirituality and working at becoming a nurturing community. Such a base will enable us to welcome visiting scholars from around the world to participate in events we organize, to come for sabbaticals, etc.
The Centre will have a vested interest in developing a new generation of Christian scholars and with this in mind its geographical academic partner will be Redeemer University College, a liberal arts undergraduate college working out of the Kuyperian tradition and based in Ancaster, Ontario. Centre faculty will work with Redeemer University to inspire a new generation of students with the vision of incarnating the Gospel in all areas of life.
